Malawi, a predominantly rural nation with over 80% of its population residing in rural areas, faces numerous health challenges, with mental health being one of the most neglected. According to UNICEF, mental health disorders contribute substantially to the burden of disease in Malawi, yet the country’s mental health infrastructure is grossly inadequate. The Mental Health Act of 1948, which governs mental health policy in Malawi, is outdated and fails to address the contemporary needs and understandings of mental health care. This antiquated legislative framework reflects a historical neglect that has significantly hampered the development of effective mental health policies and services.
A major issue hindering the progress of MHPSS in rural Malawi is the limited access to mental health services.

Geographical barriers play a significant role, as rural areas are often remote and lack basic infrastructure, making it challenging for individuals to reach mental health care facilities. Improving access to services is another critical area. Mobile clinics can be utilized to reach remote areas and provide mental health services to populations that otherwise lack access. Enhancing program implementation is also essential.

Developing long-term plans for mental health programs that include provisions for sustainability beyond initial funding periods can help address the issue of program sustainability. Furthermore, improving coordination between government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations can create a more cohesive and effective approach to mental health care.

From his latest album titled “Before I Sleep,” Suffix also came up with a song “Kwathu” together with Zyuga to act against people who describes Malawi with negative stereotypes to say it is a jungle and a country famous of witchcraft on behalf of the Malawians as a response that Malawi has beautiful places like Majete Game Reserve and Lake Malawi, and that we (Malawians) cannot copy foreign cultures and practices. This is evidenced in the lines “Ena amati Malawi n’kutchire, timangotchuka ndi zaufiti, tizakuviikani nazo mu Shire, tikuuzeni chenicheni n’chiti, muzabwele, muzapite ku Majete, ndizakutengeleninso ku lake Malawi, n’nagwa nawe m’chikonde, eko mphete. Makope adadula ndiye sitingakopele za kunja. Zikhalidwe zomanyozesa asungwana athuwa. Zomawasala osauka ukaiphula.”

 
The artist further advocate that we (Malawians) have to be proud of our own cultures and other special things that God gave us in our country when he said, “Zitamatele bwezi nzikoma, kuvina magule ndi ng’oma, malipenga, tchopa, ingoma, kaya m’buso, kaya n’dyomba. Mesa kwathu nkokuno, anatipasa zathu kuposa kwina. Kodi sim’dziwa sim’dziwa?  Anatipasa zathu zoposa kwina.”
The use of the lines, “Sitizazimabe, Malawi anayaka moto, tili mu n’dima eeh n’chifukwa timayaka moto. Moto buu moto buu. Kumwela, pakati, kumpoto buu,” is a response to those who says Malawi is still in the dark to say that we (Malawans) shall still shine forever despite the negative remarks.

WHEN IS THE MALAWI BROADCASTING COORPERATION STATION (MBC) GOING TO BE DEMOCRATIC?

Malawi as a democratic country, it is governed by the people for the people through its elected leader, we expect it to permit voices of multiple people to be voiced out concerning issue that affects their society freely since the power to govern comes from the citizens. Media platforms are some of the channels that citizens of a democratic nation uses for disseminating views to their leader of which one of them is Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC). Since we are living in a democratic nation, many local celebrities do play a role of being a modern artist. They does this by being an educator, advisor, social critic as well as custodian of culture and society. Surprisingly, this is not the same with the democratic system of government that exist in Malawi. As Malawians, we do live in a country that is crowned with a democratic system of government where human rights and freedoms are well flooded based on our subjective values, norms, and other aspects, but when we try to practice them in our society, especially freedom of expression, we do receive harsh punishments from our government.

 
For example, ever since the government of Malawi established Malawi Broadcasting Station (MBC), we expected that many voices of people would be voiced out concerning different topics that affects our lives since we are the ones who fund the station through our own taxes from our salaries that we receive every month, and other products we buy from the shops and supermarkets. We had great feelings and expectations that there was going to be many programs that were going to be broadcasted to us and again, music by different song artists who would be disseminating tangible messages to us. Surprisingly, this is not what our eyes see and our ears hears on our tax funded stations because MBC as a public media which exist in a democratic nation, it was supposed to provide us with all the information that we need. We expected its information to be impartial and not politically biased. Instead, MBC is politically biased as if it is not for the people of the country, it is not even tolerating views of the opposition parties since it has turned into a weapon by the ruling party for propaganda issues and to attack the opposition parties.

 

In terms of music industries in Malawi, the biggest problem is that many songs that advocates about the problem that Malawi is facing are being banned on MBC TV and radio 1 and 2 which are public broadcasting stations here in Malawi that are funded by Malawians of which some of the people who pays the tax are the ones whom their songs are being banned on the public media. Some of the songs include changes by Fredokiss, Dzuka Malawi by Kalawe and ndife ana anu by Sir Patricks. This sometimes makes a lot of people ask themselves questions like “what is the whole point of having public broadcasting station if the voice of other musicians are being muted?” and again, “why are we wasting our money on such public media house if some songs are continuously being banned?”
MBC as a public broadcasting station, it was supposed to be tolerating dynamic voices from many people, especially songs that conveys different social problems of our lives. Since many people are experiencing most of the problems that are injecting this country, song artists tend to produce more songs that disseminates the problems together with their solutions and even seeking God’s intervention on the problems.

 

Advocating about the problems that Malawi is going through is not a wrong thing to do by musicians because problems that are left unvoiced remains problems. It also allows many people who are not aware of the problems to know what is happening in their country. If they are left unspoken, a lot of Malawians will be thinking that there are no any problems here in Malawi. Again, since there are a lot of people out there who are living in such problems such musicians who conveys the problems to the public mainly act as their channel for conveying their problems and when such problems are being aired on their public funded media stations, the ones who are faced with such problems feel glad that there are people who knows, understand, and are able to voice out the problems on their behalf. This gives them all the hopes that the government and other organisations will hear their problems and get assisted. If media houses ban songs that advocates about social problems that people in our country are experiencing, such people feel belittled and think that their problems are not important.

 

Furthermore, if their problems are not aired on the public media stations, many people would not know what problems majority of people are facing. Sometimes I do ask myself this question “If songs are repeatedly being banned on our tax-funded media houses, which is MBC TV and radio 1 and 2, who is going to come to the public and advocate the problems for us to the public?.” Song artists don’t just wake up in the morning and advocate about the problems to us, they are our social critics who observe the problems that are happening in our society, especially on people from the grass root level.
To be more precise, since we are living in a democratic nation where freedom of expression is one of its key elements, this means that different song artists have freedom of expression to disseminate their psychoanalytical messages that they are willing to voice out. Banning songs that conveys the social problems that the government is currently solving or failing to solve won’t help to end the already existing problems here in Malawi, instead, that strategy will only leave a lot of musicians to be living in fear of voicing out their views to the views on behalf of people who are highly facing the problems since they will definitely know that their songs would be banned from the public. On top of that, it will also slowdown the music industry of Malawi since it is one of the powerful means of conveying message to the public having in that the songs would be played on radio which is a common source of information by people in rural areas, and again on a television which is a common source of information by people from cities and towns.
If international musicians are the ones who are conveying songs about Malawian problems, it could have been a wrong thing to do and a problem as well and they could be sued as well. Since it is our own musicians whom we are both living in the same country and experiencing the same problems, their songs deserves to be played on our tax-funded public stations and we also deserve to know what is happening in our country through their songs. There must be freedom of expression.
